    Default May 2011 Newsletter

Paul FulcherThank-you to all of the woodworkers who offered such positive responses regarding our most recent issue of Canadian Woodworking & Home Improvement (issue # 71, April/May'11).

Rob and I were so encouraged by the number of woodworkers who told us that they enjoyed our last issue (Issue #71, April/May'11), and offering suggestions for follow-ups, that we have decided to make our Small Shops issue an annual publication.

We have set our Small Shops issue to run in the June/July slot, starting next year. I know that's a long way off right now, but don't delay sending Rob your ideas and suggestions. We've already begun to put some concepts together.

Re: this months's eNewsletter. Once again I am excited to bring you the latest in Canadian woodworking news. We strive to make this eNewsletter as timely as possible and, as a result, readers are telling us that they are finding out about woodworking related news from us months before they see it anywhere else.... sometimes it's the only way they hear of it.

    Enjoy!

A BOX FIT FOR A FUTURE KING - AND QUEEN

Box Ian Hawthorne was asked to create a box to commission for Prince William and Kate Middleton, the future King and Queen of England.

In Ian’s profession as a box maker, this is as good as a Royal Seal of Approval of his craftsmanship and will no doubt increase awareness and interest in his boxes from Royal fans and many others.

An international company approached Ian with their requirements for a bespoke wooden box after viewing images on the website www.hawthornecrafts.com.  “We were chosen to make this unique presentation box because our attitude to crafting perfection, with precision and care, reflects our customer’s own approach to making their products. I am absolutely thrilled to have created this commemorative gift box,” continues Ian. “and wish the happy couple all the very best in their future lives together.”  The box is handmade from native Sycamore wood with matching trays and the Royal Monogram is added to the  lid using fine marquetry from Aryma Ltd, England.  Ian’s details are included in a congratulations card being added to the inside.

Ian creates bespoke boxes to commission for businesses and private individuals throughout the world.

    ONTARIO COMPANY RECLAIMING HISTORY

Imagine if you will that the piece of wood that you have in your exposed beam ceiling, or as a fireplace mantle, tabletop, or flooring was hand hewn with simple tools almost two hundred years ago and the possibility that the tree that the lumber came from was almost one hundred years old at the time of harvest.

pb This is why the folks at The Bored Barn love their work so much and enjoy offering you the results of reclaiming history.

Bored Barn specializes in reclaiming vintage lumber from historic wooden barns in and around Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada and make it available at wholesale prices.

cbbBored Barn's goal is to preserve and salvage vintage lumber from tired old historic wooden barns that are either no longer in use or beyond the point of repair.

    Bored Barn practices 3R's:

    vfReCLAIM
Deconstuct and divert these valuable building materials from local landfills.
    ReSTOCK
Provide this historic lumber to the public from our very own historic inventory barn.
    RePURPOSE
With the vision of each client in mind, create new meaning and function for these vintage resources.

Based in the majestic hills of Northumberland County, Bored Barn strives to keep each and every local historic barn from landfill, thereby reducing the impact on the environment, and allowing our customers the opportunity to share in the beauty that these materials have to offer.

Preservation is paramount as Bored Barn deconstruct a variety of old growth lumber structures, striving to save everything from the rolled stone in the foundation on up to the peak ridge board.

The vast majority of the wood from the Bored Barn is old growth virgin forests. What that means to you is that their product is, in most cases, hundreds of years old with few imperfections such as knots and rot.

Their inventory includes: hand hewn beams, rough sawn timbers, classic barn board, vintage flooring, and historic hardware.

ROCKLER INTRODUCES FIRST STEEL ROUTER TABLE CABINET

Galvanized Steel Cabinet Provides Complete Tool Storage and Integrated Dust Collection.

closedrt Rockler Woodworking and Hardware has introduced a Router Table Cabinet made of galvanized steel with an integrated dust collection system. The steel cabinet, which pushes role boundaries between a traditional router and a shaper, was designed by Rockler woodworkers to serve as the ultimate router workstation, providing room for storage, internal dust collection, and options for adding convenient shelves and drawers.

The result is an all-in-one router station that conveniently stores router bits, wrenches, jigs, and more. The top of the Steel Router Cabinet has pre-drilled mounting holes compatible with all Rockler router tables, as well as many brand name tables.

Other unique features of the all-steel Rockler Router Cabinet include:

    - Convenient internal dust bucket provides a cleaner work surface by creating a vacuum below the table to significantly reduce the amount of dust and wood chips generated by routing operations

    - A recessed 4" dust port in the back of the cabinet minimizes the clearance needed when connecting to a dust collection system

    - Heavy-duty construction gives the cabinet the weight and stability of a stationary shaper, minimizing vibration and increasing the chances of getting consistent cutting results.

"Our goal was to build something unlike any other router cabinet on the market", says Dan Wenning, product development specialist with Rockler. "We surpassed our goal. Nobody else offers a cabinet built entirely out of galvanized steel that comes with an internal dust collection system. Router enthusiasts looking for storage, order, and convenience will come to view this cabinet as a cornerstone of their shop."

CHISEL DOCTOR SHARPENS TO RAZOR EDGE IN SECONDS

Did you know that chisels in the store are not ready to use?

inset of micro bevel As sold, the blades are not sharp enough for any type of woodworking. They need to be honed for a razor-sharp edge. As anyone who works with chisels will tell you, a well-honed blade is a pleasure to use; however, the current sharpening methods using water stones, diamond laps, etc., to sharpen are anything but pleasurable. They are costly, time-consuming and often yield unpredictable results.

Thanks to The Chisel Doctor, woodworkers can now enjoy working with sharp chisels all the time – with minimal cost and effort. The Chisel Doctor is unlike any other sharpening device on the market in that it’s used exclusively with sandpaper.

The Chisel Doctor weighs just under 15 oz. It is a steel forging that holds any width and type of blade Half inch chisel from 1/8” to 2”, including short blades for spoke shaves, etc. The chisel is held in place by a hefty clamp bar and  two large thumbnuts, which are ball-nosed to allow the bar to lie flat on tapered blades.  After clamping the chisel in place, the user simply rubs the blade back and forth a few times on various grits of sandpaper that are mounted on a flat rigid surface.

To prevent rocking of the blade, The Chisel Doctor features two widely spaced rollers, which remain clear of the sandpaper even with long sharpening strokes. An innovative feature of the device is that unlike most sharpening jigs, The Chisel Doctor comes with built-in aligning pins which keep the blade square without the need for an external fixture, delivering a precise cutting edge that any craftsman will greatly appreciate.

48 mm (2 inch) plane blade So, why use sandpaper?  Richard Rex, the product designer, explains how sharpening with sandpaper is a convenient and money-saving process…

“With The Chisel Doctor, sharpening chisels couldn't be easier. There is no special technique to learn, and there are many advantages to using sandpaper. It’s available in all the grits you need, it wears evenly and doesn't hollow-out like a stone (and costs a lot less, too). In addition, sandpaper won't burn the edge like a grinding wheel (no quenching needed), and it’s easy to replace when worn. You can use oil or water, but you don't have to."

The Chisel Doctor ships with a starter pack of peel-and-stick sandpaper in various grits from 100 to 1500. These are laid down, in grit order, on a flat, smooth surface such as laminate covered MDF, marble tile or plate glass. For routine honing (or to hone a new chisel) the in use #1 blade is set for 30o, and is rubbed back and forth a few times on 320 grit, followed by the series of finer grits; finally, the wire edge is removed by stroking the back of the tool on 1500 grit.

That's all there is to it - a very sharp blade every time, in just a few seconds.

The coarse grits from 100 to 220 are used for 25o grinding to restore a nicked blade, or a blade with too-large a 30o bevel from repeated honing.

More from the product designer …

“Because The Chisel Doctor is just about indestructible, it can be tossed into the tool bag for routine honing on the construction site. It is equally at home in the shop, and has been well-received by professional woodworkers who give it high marks for speed and efficiency, especially when compared with conventional sharpening methods. You'll be surprised how quickly - and inexpensively - it puts a great cutting edge on your blades.”

    LIQUID NAILS

When it comes to adhesives, there’s a new product line on the market that nails it.

Liquid Nails, a complete line of adhesives for every home repair or construction project, is simple to use for both professionals and do-it-yourselfers alike.

Billed by many in the industry as a family of “miracle adhesives,” the products come in the form of a liquid, but work as strongly as nails,” says Nathalie Lambert, Liquid Nails Marketing Manager for AkzoNobel Decorative Paints Canada, which has introduced the products to the Canadian market.

What makes the Liquid Nails brand unique, she adds, is that each product is scientifically formulated to offer the best possible performance for any surface. “From small do-it-yourself home projects and crafts to some of the toughest challenges facing construction today, Liquid Nails offers the firmness and strength needed to make the task bind,” says Lambert.

The benefits of using adhesive over a hammer and nails are many, she explains. Not only is an adhesive easier to apply – even for the most inexperienced user – but there are times when nails simply aren’t the most suitable option, such as when installing a tub surround in a bathroom or mounting a flat-panel mirror to a wall. Users can also apply adhesive to panelling or moulding without the need to fill nail holes or worry about nail pops down the road.

The Liquid Nails line – which is already recognized as a category leader in the U.S. – includes adhesives for construction, indoor/outdoor carpeting, panelling and moulding, insulation panel and drywall, mirrors, tub surrounds, ceramic tiles, concrete, parquet and wood flooring, as well as squeezable all-purpose adhesives for leather, rubber, wood, foam, cardboard and more.

All Liquid Nails products meet Canadian VOC standards, with many meeting the stringent environmental standards put forward by the Greenguard Environmental Institute (GEI), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Some Liquid Nails products are formulated to resist rain or snow, while others work in extreme temperatures, from -5°C to 48°C (22oF to 120oF).

“Every do-it-yourselfer knows that owning a home means an endless source of projects and repairs waiting to happen,” says Lambert. “With Liquid Nails, Canadian homeowners can be assured that, when using adhesive, they can nail a job once and for all!”

Available in hardware stores and building centres across Canada, Liquid Nails retails from $ 2.59 to $ 34.99, depending on size and formulation.

DECK BUILDING JUST GOT A LOT SMARTER WITH DECKWISE

Deck These days, deck builders are being flooded with products that promise universal results. Unfortunately, the majority of these deck tools are not suitable for the toughest hardwood. To make matters worse, if someone does use the wrong screws or deck tools, the deck's overall look and performance can be negatively affected. As the leading manufacturer of hidden deck fasteners, the Ipe Clip Fastener Company is proud to introduce the DeckWise brand of tools and accessories.

According to International Sales Manager Chris Shope, "Our dealers and distributors have always asked if we could provide them with screws, plugs, gap spacers, and tools that matched the durability and performance of our deck fastening systems. With the introduction of products like our DeckWise Colormatch screws and Drill&Drive bit system, everyone from the professional deck builder to the DIY homeowner can build a hardwood deck without having to worry about using inferior products. We have also established a private labelling program for some of our DeckWise products for qualified dealers and distributors."

Chris Shope adds, "We had a number of builders try out our products. The response was overwhelmingly positive because each application was made more simple and efficient. With DeckWise, we're certain that builders and homeowners will be able to construct stronger, more reliable hardwood decks."
