Default Computer Program for drawing/designing furniture?

    Hi,
Like the title says. I'm wondering what people use for drafting up plans for cabinet and furniture design.

Specifically looking for somethimg that can show exploded views of joinery.

Do not need it to create CNC files, just want to be able to print them off and work off them.

    Thanks

Sketchup is good. And here is a website with an excellent tutorial to get you going, http://www.srww.com/google-sketchup.htm.

    Cheers, Dave

Personally I use solid works. But I also have it from work, so it's free. It's very powerful software, but also very expensive. Sketchup is the general go to, and like posted above, there are LOTS of tutorials available.

I am sitting at my computer generating shop drawings on SketchList 3D. I am the developer and at this time seek feedback on what types of drawings woodworkers need in their shops. I have asked my customers, and many other woodworkers so far. The answer seems to be a little bit like "I'll know it when I see it." If you have some input - or can send me ideas or drawings - I'd appreciate it.

    Thank you.

    Thanks for the replies
So can you draw exploded view and 3 dimensional joinery? Oblique?
Will the program calculate measurement and label automatically?
These would be the things I would be looking for.

There are a few. Most are quite expensive.

I have been using Furniture maker -- like all less expensive software it has its issues.

Have a look at Don Chekes work.

There is eCabinet for Cabinetry etc.

    Hope that helps.

I should also point out that you really do Need the Professional or Platinum version for the 3D capability. The Platinum version also includes architectural tools for installation/remodeling and original design work. They are quite powerful tools.

We really do need a separate forum for this design stuff as the same questions come up and get rehashed and the same answers are given all the time.

Even if such a forum were low volume it would clearly be useful.

Thanks for the tip David, I checked out the Sketchup tutorial you mentioned last night, I found it very helpful and done in a well explained step by step manner.

    Thanks again

Well after ordering the Learning vids and playing with the program for 2-3 months you will still have no idea how much or what it can do. It has a steep learning curve to make the most of it's programming. FWIW JMHO.

So does that mean you have given up on it?

I've struggled with most CAD programs, and have not been able to get away from using pencil/paper. I did get E-Cabinet disk a few years ago, installed it, and have yet to use it. Sketch-Up, DeltaCad, and a couple of other ones are others that I have never gotten beyond a few hours of struggle before abandoning. Maybe it's just my skill set is not suited to any CAD application.

O NO -- I haven't given up on It -- I'm still learning after 6 yrs. and many builds. Here is my latest rendering of a kitchen that I'm doing right now.

That's quite good, Wally. We're perpetually in search of good software tools to share with our customers. Not sure if most will be willing to overcome the learning curve, but it looks like a good suggestion for those willing to do the work.
