    Default Uses for cottonwood?

I have a giant old cottonwood tree that washed up onto my beach about 3 years ago. It is 2 feet to 4 feet thick for 30 feet, with some interesting twists and knots. Most call it a junk wood. Does anyone have a positve experience with this wood. I have access to an Alaska Mill setup and am considering cutting 3 inch slabs for a dining table. Thank you

It's a soft wood that fuzzes easily and doesn't have a lot of structural strength. In thinner sizes, it should be OK if you use it for things like drawer sides. I don't know if I would use it for something like a show face but it certainly should work for secondary wood.

    Regards,

Give it a try if the wood meets your wants after it is slabbed. The salt water may have done some interesting thing's to the texture.

It's an easy wood to work.

My nephew pulled a sinker out of the Atchafayla (sp?) Basin in Louisiana and milled it for a harvest table. It was about 30 inches throughout. He slabbed a 2 inch top and some 4x4s for the legs. Brought it to a cabinet shop after 2 years of shed drying. It is beautiful. Several coats of poly hardened it up plenty.

The main use for cottonwood is as groundwood pulp for making toilet paper. In the local mill entry level jobs were in groundwood and it was known as "Cottonwood College".

Bob I mixed some medium walnut flecto with some maple flecto stain then sprayed it with some poly uratane. Very hard for me to do any to projects the same because I experiment far to much when I do things for myself.
